Care and Protection of Survivors/Victims of Trafficking and Violence
Mysore Consultation, May 5-6, 2006

With support from SARI/Equity, Odanadi convened a multi-stakeholder consultation in Mysore from 5 to 6 May 2006 to discuss practical ways of applying the Regional Victim Witness Protection and Minimum Standards of Care Protocols as well as the Regional Resource Book on Livelihood Options in Karnataka. The Department of Women & Child; Department of Social Welfare; State Commission for Women; law enforcement agencies; the judiciary; NGOs; media; private companies; and activists participated.

The Consultation was inaugurated by Mr. Subhash Bharani, IPS, Assistant Director General of Police, Karnataka, who stated that the Regional Protocols developed with SARI/Equity’s efforts were a “good sign” of change in society and authorities had to make “honest efforts” to implement them. He advised police officers to regard human trafficking incidents as crimes against humanity and to treat victims with dignity. He urged stakeholders, especially the police, to carefully study the provisions of the two protocols to ensure protection and care for victims/survivors during the rescue, rehabilitation and reintegration process. The Consultation was chaired by Mr. V. Srinivas Prasad, Former Union Minister of Food and Civil Supplies.

Justice A.V. Chandrashekhar, Member Secretary, Karnataka State Legal Aid, congratulated SARI/Equity for initiating a “nation-wide advocacy” drive for the implementation of the two regional protocols which in his view were the tangible results of the vision and the dreams of “socially alarmed people”. It was time for politicians and bureaucrats to join in, irrespective of their party affiliations and political differences.

The Consultation concluded with participants agreeing to actively promote implementation of the two protocols in their organizations/work areas.
